a what to wear moment

While taking the kids (my own kids) to different events, playgroups, lunches, or even just to the store I have been asked if I was their nanny, a lot. Actually it happens almost every time I am out with someone else and their kids as well. Like I am the tag along help.

Today was no exception. We were at the playscape and a woman was out with her dog, in passing she said how cute the kids were, and so blonde. I said yeah they are pretty fun to have around. Then she gave me a funny look and said, "are you their mother?" I said yeah.
And she then said "you don't dress like a mom." What the devil is that supposed to mean?

In that perfect moment where I wanted to interrogate her and say what does a mom dress like, I ended up running to stop Harrison from stomping through dog poop that Gwen just pointed out. When the poop situation was under control her dog must have been finished with his business because she had already walked away.

I may have been in super causal wear, fitted T-shirt, jeans, and a hoodie that I love, with a pair of diesel sneeks, but people we were at the park, and it is chilly in the morning here. I was showered, I happened to have makeup on, and my hair was done! So I don't feel like I was grubby, I have had so many worse days in public, oh so much worse.

Anyway the rest of the day I have been plagued by this womans comment. What is a mom "supposed" to look like? And why am I bugged by that? Should I dress up more to take my kids outside?

Uhh, if I'm any example of what a mom "dresses like," you would need to be NOT wearing any makeup, be wearing slightly wrinkled clothes a couple or few years out of date, with a few smears of kid-snot and peanut butter, and with a "wash and wear" hairstyle (or in my case, a no-hair hairstyle).
I would take is as a compliment, girl! You look way too young and hip to be a mom!

What kind of person asks that is my question? But you are definitely a cool, good dressing mom!

Lonna, this was definitely a compliment, however masked it seemed. It's because you're too cute to look like you birthed and are raising two kids. Instead of asking people's advice on what a mom should look like, you should be giving out pointers!

I have come to realize that people are generally stupid and it is best to ignore them. You have a young face and dress nicely. Many mothers look worn down and dress sloppy. It gives me great pleasure to just look at you, you are so nice to look at.

Oh Lonna, blessing and a curse. I have been there. I too am wondering if this meant next time: wear Chanel business casual to the park or did it mean next time: somehow accumulate a pot belly and mom jeans and play up the frumpiness we sometimes manage to fight off on a good day. :) Fortunately, you are rocking the 'I look way too good to have given birth to all of these kids' look, so. I always thought youthfulness was a bad thing until I had a friend who was mistaken for her son's grandma ALL THE TIME. Then I said so what if I blend in with the Beehives? :)

That is a great compliment Lonna! I swear, I dress like a mom... jeans and a t-shirt EVERYDAY!! Alyssa always tells me that she is going to nominate me for "What not to wear" so that I can be stylish!! I am so not a fashionista at all anymore!
You on the other hand, are very hip and stylish!
Love you guys
