This weekend we took the kids camping at Granger Lake not too far from our home. It was really fun to see the kids trying new things as we set up camp and got ready for the night. Gwen helped James set up the tent for a few minutes and she was pretty good at assembling the tent poles.

While James and I unloaded the gear the kids made themselves right at home in the car. Yikes!

James took some time to show Harrison how a professional starts a fire...

But Harry was a little more interested in just being a rock star.

We let the kids make a good attempt at cooking hot dogs, and roasting marshmallows, but in the end they just wanted to eat the food and not cook it. Turns out that the Barlow's are not really the hunter gatherer type, maybe more along the lines of open and eat.
The kids did really well sleeping in the tent even though it did end up getting a little colder than we thought. All in all a fun and exciting trip. I think that next time will be better just because we now know what to expect with the kids, and they can get all excited to use their little sleeping bags which were a huge hit. Hooray for family camping.

You guys are brave! Glad it went well. We went last year and it got so cold no one slept. We won't be going back for a very long time...good for you guys for going and having a good time!
Good job at a family camping trip. I know just how the kids feel, Taylor cooks my food for me too. I usually am too impatient and burn it.
Where did you go? It almost looks like a big park.
How fun!! Those two are so cute! Hopefully sometime Jon and I can head to Texas and go camping with you all. Miss you guys!
That looks like fun. Maybe we should give it a whirl, but we might need James to return our tent and other camping gear now that he is no longer the scout master. :)
you are way more brave than i am. of course, camping for me is like hotel without cable. i'm just not the camping type, but it looks like you guys had a total blast!
Wow, I am wishing Liv and I had just invited ourselves to one ordeal or the other, who cares about ice cream. :) Ha ha, there will be a lot more where camping came from I'm sure...now that we all have supplies, though I'm glad you gave it a good test run. And who needs cooked hot dogs anyway? It sounds like G & H and L & M could be up all night telling ghost stories with those flashlights. Love it! Now really all we need is a canoe.
What a fun time you had! Where was the dirt and the bugs??? I don't know if you can call it camping if there is no bugs or dirt! Maybe we would have liked camping better if there was such nice grass as you had. Congratulations on successful camping!
Camping is pretty fun with kids... I always freak out that someone is going to trip and fall in the fire.
Besides that we love camping!
So do you knit? The hat I made is super easy I could send a pattern to you.... I mostly make it up as I go but I could give you the basics. What's your email?
I totally agree with James mom, Camping might have been fun if there wasn't so much dirt involved. Maybe we should have lived in Texas. But the few experiences we had were not all that great, for the mom and dad. perhaps i should have been more of a trooper. But the second generation is supposed to be better at family togetherness. way to go we are proud of you. Love mom and dad
See what happens when James gets called to be the scout leader for a few months? Going camping with his family is now a cake walk! What fun!
