church vs. travel time

Pretty much everyone that I know has at one time or another talked to me about when their spouses have to travel for their jobs, or some sort of business related something or other, and it starts me into thinking each time how James has never had to do that.

Don't get me wrong he works plenty hard and tacks on the every so often late nights and weekend video shoots for work, but never having to do the three days in town three days traveling. With that said I feel very lucky that he is usually around for whatever we may have going on...it is here that I now have to bite my tongue a little and take back the part about being around. A few months ago we both received new church callings, and while mine pretty much allows me to only to do things on Sunday's, James' callings (yes callings) take on everything else.
This last weekend he was prepping and gearing up for a monthly camp out....for those of you who know us you are probably laughing right now, we are not really what you would call "campers". But the less and less that I see of James ( or Scout Master as I now call him) I feel like I identify a little more with the many many many women that I know that have traveling men. To them I would just like to say you are amazing for doing all the work that you do alone. Hats off to you, and if you want to know what it is that I do every night while James is away, well the answer is a giant nada. I think that it is high time to take on a hobby. I'll have to look into that.

I recommend knitting!
Sorry you've been having some lonely nights, but I bet your family is thrilled to have another scout master in the family!

Waah! Your dad was the scout master for eight years and then did JLT for 4 years, and you just get used to it and come on, you are creative. Besides you have children to entertain you. We love you, and at least it's warm there. But maybe a hobby would be fun too, I'd rather read a book.

Well when Ryan was away nights, my hobbies included checking the locks and picking up kitchen knives to scout out intruders...extra brownie points if you get your neighbors involved. :(
I was going to say at least a calling won't keep you overnight but ah-camping. I do empathize with holding down the fort for an extended period of time. Around here we even have a club for that-the sisterhood of the traveling husbands. I am hoping I never have to join, but you are right, it does make way for a hobby!
There was the time you and I tried crochet...it went over about as well as scrapbooking for me. But my latest hobby is going to be yoga, yes Ryan has tricked me into exercise by ordering it on NetFlix. I'll let you know if it's a go. You know what would be a comment without mentioning some type of movie or tv series...come to think of it you are kind of lucky to have some newfound time all to yourself. :)

Scout Master!? Sweet! What a rugged man you have living in your house now. At least he's not in the bishopric or, heaven forbid, THE bishop! When you find a hobby let me know, because it looks like I'm going to be hanging around for a few weeks with nothing to do.

P.S. I LOVED your comment about how my baby is more anticipated than a celebrity's. That totally made me laugh since I am a celebrity stalker. You're great Lonna!

I live in fear of Brian being called to be the scout master or the ym pres. My feathers get a little ruffled when he is gone for work and then gone some more.

I am so glad that I have Steve as much as I do, but trust me there are times that I WISH that a church calling would take him away for a few weekends and nights..hehehe!! No I'm just kidding, it's really hard having them away but if anyone can do it...it's YOU!! I am so excited that you are coming out I absolutely CANNOT wait to see you!!! Please say you are staying for a really long time!

The only difference I see when Brent isn't here is I just don't have to cook dinner for him!! Other than that, things don't change that much. When he's home, he conveniently comes home 15 minutes before the kids go to bed - when they are fed, bathed, changed and so tired they can barely move. And then i have to feed him!! Jk. i do like it better when he's home. and a hobby? they are overrated!! a monthly campout. I'm not jealous. I'm not a big camper. I just don't like the Saturday meetings for Brent's callings. For some reason Saturdays without Brent feel like an eternity. Lucky for me he has had Saturday meetings every Saturday for the last 4 weeks and will continue to have them for hte next few. So, if you need a buddy when James is gone, let me know!

Blogging is soooo totally a hobby. ;) If all else fails invest in (or use your current) DVR. It records everything you've ever wanted to watch: Amazing Race, Lost, American Idol... Then you'll be super hip and sassy - like me. Ha Ha!
